Nerdy About Flooring- TARR

Feature Story 2 with Cara Fugate, Philadelphia Commercial

TARR or the Textile Appearance Retention Rating is a testing method in flooring that provides guidelines on how long your carpet will maintain its appearance after traffic. These ratings can be used to gauge if a product will withstand the amount of traffic that your space will encounter on a daily basis.
How is the test performed?

The Hexapod Drum Test is the nationally recognized method that lines the drum of a rotating cylinder with the carpet to be tested. A Hexapod is inserted into the cylinder, which simulates foot traffic on a carpet. The drum is then rotated 12,000 times, which is the same rotation for every carpet tested. After the cylinder has completed its rotations, 3 or more judges evaluate the worn carpet against the original new carpet, using set indicators and give it a final grade of 5-1, 5 meaning no visual change from the control sample and 1 meaning significant change.

Picture
TARR ratings can be used to evaluate how the face of the carpet will wear with light, moderate, heavy, and severe foot traffic. Severe Traffic requires a 3.5 or greater rating and are typically utilized for airports or similar public building. Heavy ratings at 3.0 and higher are typically considered for high traffic office space, corridors, office building public spaces, or similar high traffic areas. The minimum TARR rating for a light commercial space would be a 2.0, which would be for private office space, back of house areas that have minimal staff, or similar spaces that are not open to the public.

If you are working on a budget and have multiple traffic levels, TARR ratings can be used to evaluate products to get the best value for mixed use. Mixing a product with Severe or Heavy rating for entries and common spaces and a more budget friendly Moderate or Light rating for back of house areas that won't need a high traffic wear can be a cost effective way to meet your needs.
Although the TARR rating is a good indicator of how a product will perform in a space, there are other factors that will contribute to the overall performance of a product that are not tested in the TARR method. Those include variations in backings and padding, color of the fibers, maintenance, and other project specific factors. All of these factors should be evaluated when making the final selection for any space.

Nerdy About Flooring- Type 6,6 Nylon

Feature Story 1 with Nicole Buland, Mannington Commercial

A lot of conversations start with what type of fiber should I use- nylon or polyester, but once that has been decided, the conversation tends to stop. If you have decided on nylon, did you know that there is more than one type? Today I am joined by Nicole Buland with Mannington Commercial to give you a better understanding of Type 6,6 Nylon to start the conversation on which nylon is right for your project.
The fiber, although the size of a human hair, is where the pile strength and durability come from in the face of a carpet. What makes this type of nylon unique? It is the chemical composition that includes six carbon atoms and six nitrogen atoms that are in direct alignment, creating a tight symmetrical unit of 6+6 within a strong, dense molecular structure. (1) This provides superior structure and durability in the face of the carpet.
Picture
Video gives a quick introduction to Type 6,6 Nylon

What does a stronger and more durable fiber really improve? Stain Resistance, crush resistance, and dimensional stability. All of these factors help your carpet look better and last longer with the proper maintenance.

In fact, with the proper maintenance, Type 6,6 Nylons can last 20+ years in a variety of projects with high traffic. Projects that have found success with Type 6,6 include healthcare, education, public spaces, and many more that are looking for a long-life span.

Of course, we couldn't end the conversation without a few fun facts about the history, origins, and updates of nylon through the years.

Plus, new advancements have made it possible for recycled resins to be utilized! Current Type 6,6 Nylons include 75% total recycled content to create a durable and sustainable selection in Nylon.

Video gives fun facts about nylon - Do you know what Nylon was originally used for?

No Maintenance Flooring

Is there really a no maintenance flooring?

We all want that easy to maintain product- set it and forget it, right? But what happens when someone spills? years of wear and tear buildup? someone moves a piece of furniture and snags a rock while sliding it across the floor?
Have you seen marketing on your food that says things like, "40% Less Fat" or "30% Less Calories"? These things imply that this food is healthy; however, it doesn't mean that this food is now the healthiest option. It simply means it is reduced from before.
What do you hear when you see the term "No Maintenance"? It implies that you will not have to clean your floor, but it does not say that, it says no maintenance. In this, the maintenance is referring to the annual maintenance only.
Picture
The intention behind No Maintenance came from the transition from VCT (vinyl composition tile) to LVT (luxury vinyl tile). VCT did not have a finish, so it had to be stripped and waxed annually for the best performance.

LVT comes with a wear layer to protect the image of the flooring. This layer doesn't have to be reapplied each year, like a VCT wax; therefore, no annual maintenance, which got shortened to no maintenance for advertisement. However, this became misleading when a spill or a buildup of dirt from normal wear and tear accumulated on the flooring. In fact, some manufacturers have changed the verbiage to "Low Maintenance" to change the conversation, since stains, spots, and/or scratches will happen in all flooring over time.
Picture
Today, the conversation revolves around sweeping, dry mopping, damp mopping, deep cleanings, and potential refinishing in high traffic areas to keep your LVT looking it's best throughout the life of the product.

These products will still save time and money without the annual refinishing required in VCT; however, it isn't quite the "no maintenance" product that gets requested.

Make sure to discuss your maintenance expectations before selecting a final finish.

Summer Intern Back to School

Kansas City is officially back to school, and with that goes the youngest member of Lucas Flooring, Logan. Starting his first year of middle school, this was the first year, of hopefully many, that Logan joined the team through summer break to learn the flooring business.
Having grown up around the flooring industry since he was born, Logan came into the summer with a pretty good understanding of the basics, but this year he has gotten a behind the scenes look at everything that goes into a commercial flooring project. Measuring projects, cleaning carpets, picking out materials, and general office tasks were among a few of the tasks Logan got involved in over the summer.
Although Logan says he still wants to be a professional golfer, he enjoyed his summer internship in the office and still loves picking out the best products for projects.

His main goal for next year is to learn how to drive the forklift, but I think he has a few years before we get to that. Until then, he has volunteered to do the shredding on any upcoming out of school days this year!
The Lucas Team wishes Logan and all of the summer interns out there a great year at school!
Picture
Real talk for the other family businesses with summer interns... Have you ever been around the endless energy of an 11-year-old for an entire summer? Although we enjoyed having Logan around the office, we are also VERY happy to be back to school!

Should Carpet Have Cushion in the Workspace?

Picture
Designing a commercial interior space is typically about productivity, longevity, and efficiency. What if comfort adds to higher productivity, adds years to the lifespan of the product, and creates a more efficient workspace? Workplace design has started looking different in the last 4 years, but one thing that has always remained the same is, that if your employees enjoy their workspace, productivity increases!
Performance
How does cushion improve the performance of a carpet tile in an office environment? As you walk on carpet tile, your feet are impacting the softest surface of the product. In a hardback carpet tile, the surface fibers take the brunt of the shoe, flattening the fibers between the two hard surfaces.

Now think about walking across the surface fibers with a more flexible cushion under the surface. As you walk across, although you are putting direct pressure on the fibers, the cushion flexes under the weight, which allows less pressure on the fibers. This keeps the surface fibers from flattening and looking older than they are.
Picture

Wellness

Taking employee wellness into account is one of the most positive changes that 2020 has brought into the workplace. Cushioned surfaces have been proven to support feet, legs, and backs more, especially in working areas where standing is promoted.

With sit-to-stand desks being a popular feature in today’s workspace, choosing a cushioned back carpet tile will provide more support to employees while standing at their desks.
Acoustics
Carpet tile in general compared to hard surfaces provides better sound absorption by preventing sounds from bouncing around a room, but cushioned carpet tile can increase that performance by up to 50%. With an office space with fewer noise distractions, productivity will also naturally increase!

Cushioned carpet tile used to be a custom item that cost hours in design time and large fees in overages and minimums. Today there are standard designs that provide designs for several options!

Discuss These 3 Things to Add Value to Your Flooring

When you're investing in new flooring, it's important to get the best value for your money. Value isn't just about the price tag; it's about getting the right product that meets your expectations and needs. Think of it like choosing a burger: whether you go for a ½ lb burger for $10, a ¼ lb burger for $7, or a 1/8 lb burger for $5 depends on how hungry you are. Flooring is similar—there isn't a one-size-fits-all option, so you need to find what works best for you!
Picture

How Long You'll Stay

First, think about how long you plan to stay in the space. If you're expanding quickly and might move in a few years, a budget-friendly flooring option that lasts about five years might be perfect. It keeps your space looking fresh without breaking the bank. But if you plan to stay put for 15+ years, investing in a more durable product is a smart move. Spending a bit more now means you won't have to replace it again anytime soon.

Maintenance Routine

Picture
Next, consider your cleaning routine. How you maintain your flooring can really affect how long it lasts. Take a look at your maintenance plan (or create one) and see if you’re keeping up with it. Regular vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and annual deep cleanings can make a huge difference. If your maintenance is stellar, you can make a 10-year product last even longer. But if you slack off, even the best flooring won’t look good for long. Make sure your maintenance habits match the flooring you choose so you don’t overspend or underspend.

Style and Design

Lastly, think about the fun stuff: color, pattern, and design. Does your business need to stay trendy, or do you prefer a timeless look? Trendy designs mean more frequent updates, while classic styles can last longer. Of course, we've all seen Millennial Grey's trend phase out with the introduction of warmer tones and, gasp, browns. Just like our grandmother's pink sofa and our mother's jewel tones, every trend eventually reaches its limit. If being on-trend is important, your flooring partner can help you find stylish options that fit your budget and expected lifespan. If you prefer timeless styles, plenty of options offer great value and longevity. Knowing what you want your space to look like will help you make the right choice.

Conclusion

The best way to get the right value out of your new flooring is to find a flooring partner that you can trust for your project. Open and honest communication about your needs and expectations will help ensure you get the right product at a price you can afford.
